The engine pictured is a Perkins Phaser 1004-4 TURBO direct injection 4 cylinder of 4 litres. This is a desirable model in a specification that suits numerous applications. It is all mechanical injection and mechanical governed with a throttle lever. No fly by wire or other electrical items to go wrong. One of the best 4 cylinder Perkins ever made, these engines were bullet proof and powered everything from boats, generators, lorries, forklifts, tractors and combine harvesters to name but a few. They are economical to run but also pull like a train being a long stroke turbo diesel. The engine has been from a machine as a good running used unit. It has the bonus of a high speed governed fuel pump set to give a decent max speed under load and boost control to provide more fuel as the turbo builds up boost pressure. The pump will govern at any speed desired but of course the higher revs would come in handy in a mobile vehicle such as a van , tractor or forklift application etc. Rear well sump which would suit fitting into most applications or alternatively this sump is handy if fitting into a tractor as it could be easily cut and altered to suit. There is a removable back plate and flywheel fitted which could come in handy if fitting into a conversion project on a vintage tractor and such. It starts up well from cold or hot, with no heat required. Usual bit of blue smoke till its warmed up a bit , like all Perkins do, then there’s no smoke worth mentioning when warm other than a whiff when revved as expected. Runs sweet throughout the rev range, capable of revving up to high rpm, so will give a good turn of speed in a tractor. The fuel pump is the mechanical governed type which is more favourable in a tractor or plant machine also. Great oil pressure hot and cold, it does breathe a little when hot as all Perkins tend to do but nothing excessive. No knocks or rattles. No leaks or frost cracks etc, it is a very good example of a second hand engine which I wouldn’t hesitate in fitting to something as it is. You can swap your ancillary parts about from your engine onto this to fit it into your application should yours be different. A point worthy of mention is the back plate and flywheel bolt holes are the same as the older 4.236 so you could retro. Fit this Phaser with those parts to convert something with this engine. These engines have been retro fitted into Fordson tractors, grey Fergies, 35’s. 65’s etc and Nuffield/Leyland and JCB’s by simply redrilling the BMC/Leyland back plate etc. The price of rebuilding an old worn out engine will cost a lot more than what we’re asking so don’t waste your time when this is ready to go.
